Final Film:

The Ask: Create and breathe life into two Salmon, while giving them anthropomorphic visually different personalities for a fiction short film focused on environmental activism in the form of a satirical comedy.

The two characters, Shirley and Nancy, act as a visual vessel for satirical comedy and as cautionary tales for harmful environmental decisions showing their impact on wild life. As a designer, I decided the visuals needed to be slap sticky but create clarity for the viewer.

Below are the inspirational visuals I was provided.

The first step was to distinguish Shirley from Nancy. Nancy throughout the script has a real sense of naivety and an urge to do the right thing. Shirley is a bit more blunt and a joker. These simple character traits needed to be conveyed in line work that shows their differences. Since Shirley is a bit of a joker, I decided to work with more curved lines to convey her looseness. For Nancy, I wanted something maternal and nurturing, so I went with an angular feminine look.

Here’s the mouth sheets for Shirley and Nancy.

Once we isolated the right combinations it was time to start lip syncing.
